“Today, I am donating all the 317 drawings I have created over the past 69 years to the city of Gaoping, and will also hold academic lectures so that more students can learn about China’s 5,000 years of cultural thought through cartoons in a fun and educational way, turning learning into a great joy. If a person finds what he likes best, what he is best at, and does it to the best of his ability, no matter what he does, there is nothing that he will not succeed in. And I have spent 69 years doing just one thing.” At the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Tsai Chi-Chung Museum, Taiwanese cartoonist Tsai Chi-Chung shared his journey and his wish to donate to the museum.

Gaoping is the hometown of Shennong Yandi, the site of the Battle of Changping, the Museum of Chinese Ancient Architecture and the hometown of Shangdang Bangzi, a place where the juice of civilization can ooze from a handful of clay. Gaoping’s deep historical and cultural heritage and rich historical themes provide rich material and inspiration for Tsai Chih Chung’s cartoon creations. The establishment of the Tsai Chih Chung Art Museum is an important achievement in deepening cultural exchanges and cooperation across the Taiwan Strait in Gaoping, and a major event in the history of Gaoping’s urban transformation and cultural development. It will not only become a unique cultural landmark in Gaoping City, but also a platform for the display and exchange of culture and art across the Taiwan Strait. Integrating aesthetic art, exhibition and exchange, the art museum will comprehensively and systematically display Mr. Tsai Chih Chung’s art works, and make the museum the best platform for cultural and artistic display and exchange through art exhibitions, academic exchanges, public education and other all-round activities.

Located in Gao Ping City, Shanxi Province, this 7030 sqm art museum is set amidst the beautiful mountain and lake scenery of Gao Ping City. The design of the museum is inspired by the dynamic brushstrokes of Tsai Chih Chung’s calligraphy and painting, the brush starts from the visionary “mountain”top studio and falls on the leisurely “water”he boundaries between the building and the mountain and lake become blurred and seamless.

Program Design

The exterior of the building is wrapped in red brick, using the most rustic materials to maintain the most friendly relationship with the surrounding environment. The continuous folding elements, with their hard ‘brush strokes’, divide the building into blocks of varying shapes and functions. According to the zoning plan, the western side of the building is the artist’s studio complex and the western side of the building is the South Lake. In order to echo the main elements of the site, the building is divided into two parts: the main building and the Tsai Chih Chung residence. The two are linked by a footbridge, inserting the Tsai Chih Chung courtyard into the artist’s studio complex, in order to link the museum with the artist’s working life on the one hand, and on the other hand, from a design point of view, to extend the folding elements into the surrounding buildings, like ripples that spread outwards from the inside.

Mater plan
Front Square People View
The main body of the building is divided by the atrium, which forms three body blocks, creating different functions.
The first part is the art gallery on the east side of the building, where the main entrance to the cultural centre is also located. Visitors enter the museum through the front square and through the water corridor. The view from east to west shows the building’s relationship with the water and the mountains. From far to near, through a long, winding corridor, visitors experience the sense of entering the building from nature. The second part of the building is Tsai Chih Chung’s studio in the south-east corner of the building. The partial four-storey design corresponds to the ‘pen rising from the mountain’, and the studio at the top of the hill emphasises the building’s echo with South Lake and Niu Mountain, with floor-to-ceiling windows on the top floor providing maximum views of the lake and the mountains. And from the mountain in the distance, the Peak Studio is also the point of view. Its distinctive materials and graceful brushstrokes make it a clear landmark within the site. The final part of the building is the commercial and food service area to the west of the building. The food and beverage service area is one level only, corresponding to the ‘pen falling on water’, which leaps from the top of the hill into the water in a progressive manner. Ultimately the eye falls on the South Lake, creating a harmonious picture.

The Studio echoes the landscape
Aerial view of the southwest
Overall, the building is divided by rigid ‘strokes’, which are sculptural in form, echoing the mountains in the distance and the South Lake in the near distance. The clear flow of the folding lines guides the skylight in the middle of the building, which is an important part of the light, bringing sufficient natural lighting to the atrium and also greatly increasing the fluidity of the building, creating a feeling of space that is “sparse enough to run a horse, but dense enough to be permeable”.

Water feature in front of the main entrance
Joined by a gallery into the main entrance, the open atrium with large floor-to-ceiling windows is extremely attractive. The impact of the folded corners and the sudden inward folding of a door with large floor-to-ceiling windows, in contrast to the hard folded corners and the overall closed fa?ade, is an attraction that drives people into the building to explore the interior.

Interior space
The spatial experience inside the building

Indoor ramp
The spatial experience inside the building is enriched by the relatively soft ‘brush strokes’ of the corridors, which follow the path of Mr Cai’s calligraphy, flowing like clouds and smoke, complemented by the relationship between light and shadow created by natural lighting. The public and visitors walking along the corridor will have a subtle visual sensory experience and an artistic experience of architectural wandering.

Extensive interior corridors

The building’s atrium has a very extended feel, and with the atrium skylight, you can feel like you are in nature even when you are inside the building. The main and secondary entrances to the building are connected to the upper and lower sides of the atrium, and with the fluidity of the corridors, the boundary between the inside and outside of the building is blurred.

The exhibition hall is set around an atrium with a circular exhibition flow

Looking out onto the outdoor terrace from inside
The exhibition halls are arranged on either side of the atrium, connected by a circular ramp, with a circular exhibition flow that ensures the integrity of the visitor’s visit. The permeability of the sight lines, in turn, enhances the interest between the galleries. Each time you enter the atrium from the exhibition halls or from the atrium into the exhibition halls, the light changes to give the impression of a ‘change of scenery’.

The north elevation
South elevation
The south fa?ade faces the artist’s studio complex and therefore the fa?ade design focuses on artistry. The regular square window openings create a sense of order, while on the fa?ade there are virtual spaces created by the footbridge and outdoor staircase, solid spaces enclosed by solid walls and virtual spaces formed by floor-to-ceiling windows and terraces, where the real meets the imaginary. The relationship between points and lines also enriches the design of the south facade.

West elevation
The commercial area, the pavilion and the hilltop studio form three blocks of different heights and volumes, which have different functions but are closely linked and complement each other to form a relationship between the building as a whole and the landscape.

Aerial view of the northwest
Main entrance elevation

From the main fa?ade, the building appears to be floating above the water, with only the glass at the entrance bordering the water to form a pathway, the reality of the whole inside contrasts with the emptiness of the entrance, from the emptiness into the reality, playing a very attractive role

The Tsai Chih Chung Art Museum showcases the character of the city, nature and people of Gaoping City. Its existence encourages the local people in their pursuit of artistic life, broadens the horizons of the people of Gao Ping, and also attracts visitors from outside the city to come and enjoy the works of Mr. Tsai Chih Chung. With the building as the centre of the circle, the trend of culture and art is continuously spread in all directions, just like the ripples mentioned above, changing the quality of life of people in a region and a city in a subtle and silent way. With the Tsai Chih Chung Art Museum emerging as a new landmark, bringing a fusion of humanity, art and nature to the city of Gaoping, it is about to become an important cultural centre for the region.
Finally, with the Tsai Chih Chung Art Museum as a landmark node, Kuan Architects will continue to think broadly across boundaries and create a broad spatial and temporal vision of urban space for the people.
